Oracle Database Administration

Administrating an Oracle Database might start to look easy using one of the GUI based Administration tools that are around. Understanding what the Oracle Database is doing and how certain parameters or system design decisions affect the running of the system is something else. With now 9 years of experience in DBA work I have seen quite a number of problems that can not be "analyzed" by such automatic tools. If your Oracle database systems contribute a business critical part of your company you need an experienced professional who administers them.

The experience and technical expertise I bring to a customer have many a times prevented major problems. One of the examples I see a lot is that on-site administrators have set up backup procedures but nobody really checks that you can actually recover a database when you need to.

Eventhough Oracle makes the best database in the market which runs smoothly on most initial installations, proper setup requires understanding of the database internal parameters and also understanding what the effect is when upgrading in version or hardware. There are situations where upgrading a hardware system with more CPU or memory actually decreases performance. Application performance can be "killed" by setting the wrong parameter values (e.g. CURSOR_SHARING).
